Surah Al-Bayyinah or Bayyina is the 98th chapter of the Quran and holds a special place in Islamic teachings due to its profound message and significance. Its name, "Al-Bayyinah," translates to "The Clear Evidence" or "The Manifest Proof." This surah is a concise yet powerful revelation that carries important lessons and guidance for believers. In this blog post, we will delve into a comprehensive exploration of Surah Al-Bayyinah, covering its overview, content, and virtues.
Surah Al-Bayyinah is a relatively short surah consisting of eight verses. It is part of the 30th and final section (Juz') of the Quran and was revealed in the city of Madinah, during the later years of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) life. The surah addresses the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) and serves as a reminder and a clear proof of the truth of Islam.
Content of Surah Al-Bayyinah
The Essence of Belief: Surah Al-Bayyinah starts by emphasizing the core belief of Islam: the worship of one God, Allah. It asserts that those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the polytheists will not be saved from their disbelief unless they accept the oneness of Allah.
The Messenger and the Revelation: The surah acknowledges the arrival of a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) from Allah and a book (the Quran) that confirms the scriptures that preceded it, namely the Torah and the Bible. It emphasizes that the People of the Book knew of the Messenger and the Book as they knew their own children.
The Denial of the Truth: Despite their knowledge, the surah highlights that the People of the Book, particularly some Jewish and Christian scholars, denied the truth of Islam out of envy and arrogance. They were unwilling to accept the final message and its bearer.
The Consequences of Disbelief: Surah Al-Bayyinah warns of the dire consequences of disbelief. It states that those who reject the truth and knowingly deny it will dwell in the Hellfire, an eternal abode for those who oppose Allah's guidance.
The Virtues of Believers: The surah also praises the believers among the People of the Book, recognizing them as the best of creation. These are the individuals who embraced Islam sincerely, and as a result, they will have everlasting rewards and will not be wronged.
Virtues of Surah Al Bayyinah
Surah Al-Bayyinah carries several virtues that make it significant in the life of a Muslim:
Clear Guidance: The surah is a clear proof of the authenticity of Islam and the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). It serves as a powerful argument for the truth of the Islamic message, making it a valuable tool for dawah (inviting others to Islam).
Recognition of True Believers: The surah distinguishes between those who truly believe and those who disbelieve or have hypocritical beliefs. It encourages believers to follow the path of faith sincerely and wholeheartedly.
A Reminder of Consequences: Surah Al-Bayyinah reminds believers of the consequences of disbelief, urging them to remain steadfast in their faith and avoid any form of hypocrisy or denial of the truth.
Interfaith Dialogue: The surah addresses the People of the Book, promoting dialogue and understanding between Muslims and the followers of other Abrahamic faiths. It encourages respectful discourse and the sharing of knowledge.
Spiritual Upliftment: Reciting and reflecting upon Surah Al-Bayyinah can lead to spiritual growth and a stronger connection with Allah. It reinforces the belief in the oneness of God and the authenticity of the Quranic message.
Surah Al-Bayyinah is a concise yet profound chapter of the Quran that serves as a clear evidence of the truth of Islam. Its message transcends time and is relevant to believers seeking guidance, interfaith dialogue, and a reminder of the consequences of disbelief. By understanding its content and virtues, Muslims can strengthen their faith and share the beauty of Islam with others.

Nor did those who were
given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear

Yusuf Ali:
Nor did the People of the Book make schisms, until after there came to them
Clear Evidence.
Abul Ala Maududi:
Nor did those to whom the Book had been given split up until after the Proof
(of the Right Way) had come to them.
Muhsin Khan:
And the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) differed not until after
there came to them clear evidence. (i.e. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)
and whatever was revealed to him).
Pickthall:
Nor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came

Dr. Ghali:
And in no way did the ones to whom the Book was brought (become) disunited,

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in
religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And
that is the correct religion.
Yusuf Ali:
And they have been commanded no more than this: To worship Allah, offering Him
sincere devotion, being true (in faith); to establish regular prayer; and to
practise regular charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.
Abul Ala Maududi:
Yet all that they had been commanded was that they serve Allah, with utter
sincerity, devoting themselves exclusively to Him, and that they establish
Prayer and pay Zakah. That is the Right Faith.
Muhsin Khan:
And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship
none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform
As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion.
Pickthall:
And they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for
Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the
poor-due. That is true religion.
Dr. Ghali:
And in no way were they commanded anything except to worship Allah, making the
religion His faithfully (and) unswerving, and to keep up prayer, and bring the
Zakat; (i.e., pay the poor-dues) and that is the Religion most upright.
Abdul Haleem:
though all they are ordered to do is worship God alone, sincerely devoting
their religion to Him as people of true faith, keep up the prayer, and pay the
prescribed alms, for that is the true religion.

Pada hal mereka tidak diperintahkan melainkan supaya menyembah Allah dengan

Indeed, they who
disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in
the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.
Yusuf Ali:
Those who reject (Truth), among the People of the Book and among the
Polytheists, will be in Hell-Fire, to dwell therein (for aye). They are the
worst of creatures.
Abul Ala Maududi:
Those who disbelieved – be they from among the People of the Book or among
those who associated others with Allah in His Divinity– shall be in the Fire,
and will abide in it. They are the worst of creatures.
Muhsin Khan:
Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islam, the Quran and Prophet
Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and
Christians) and Al-Mushrikun will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst
of creatures.
Pickthall:
Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters,
will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings.
Dr. Ghali:
Surely (the ones) who have disbelieved among the population of the Book (Or:
family of the Book; i.e., the Jews and Christians) and the associators (Those
who associate others with Allah) will be in the Fire of Hell, eternally
(abiding) therein; those are they who are the most evil beings (Literally:
Initiated creatures).
Abdul Haleem:
Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book and the idolaters will have
the Fire of Hell, there to remain. They are the worst of creation.

Yusuf Ali:
Those who have faith and do righteous deeds,- they are the best of creatures.
Abul Ala Maududi:
But those that believe and work righteous deeds, they are the best of
creatures.
Muhsin Khan:
Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger
Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islam] and
do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.
Pickthall:
(And) lo! those who believe and do good works are the best of created beings.
